Kepol called me at 7.50, early Sunday morning when I usually try to resist the temptation of getting up early.
OK!, I'll be frank with you. I can't wake up early on any day to be really honest about it. On those days I managed
to get up for subuh, I will usually plonked my ass back into bed, and get up ready for brunch or lunch depending on
whether it's a weekday or weekend.
So he called, and said "mano kau Farid?", as he was obviously already waiting
at Titiwangsa court. I was just about to leave home, waiting for my two heroes of 12 year old and 7 year old boys, who insisted
they wanted to come with me to the court. "By the way", said Kepol, "kita kena pi UKM punya court pasal Titiwangsa punya court
dah pasang kemah". "Brilliant!", I thought to myself. Contingency planning at its best.
To cut the story short and
avoid the typical Malay drama-type story line where I talk about my long drive there, just to make up the minutes, 7
of us turned up. Kepol, Chile, Booten, Rash, Nan, GBoi (Khaidzir, excuse me), and moi. Interesting game that was. Half court.
Ten minutes into the game, more than half of the members were gasping for air, like a fish out of the water tank, but yet,
ran to the courtside to get the precious, nicotin-filled oxygen supply instead. So, we (those of us who do) smoke for
15 minutes, and then restarted again.
This time around, 20 points, half court, Kepol, GBoi and Chile in one team,
Nan, Booten and I in another. Nan scored a couple of early points to give us an early lead, and then Kepol started hitting
the 3 points (where the heck did that come from?). Then Nan and Booten started being creative running around the half
court, and Kepol couldn't keep up, started spinning in his head, literally! We finished the game 20 - 13 (I think),
with all the guys totally spent, like what happen to most guys on their wedding night. We lepak for like 20 minutes,
and then headed to the mamak shop near Kepol's office for a nice breakfast comprising of roti canai, and telur setengah
masak for some (I wonder why?).
The we went to Kepol's office for the meeting. Malak joined us there (he sruprised
us because we thought he could never find the place). Oh, I should add that our President for the 25 year anniversary, joined
us in spirit, as he had to take his kids home (apa la lu Rash). So, after 95 minutes of trying to play something which
may resemble music with me hitting the drum senseless (the last time I played the drum was in 1984), we had our 10 minutes
meeting (because we realised that Nan was getting a bit restless, with his kids running around the office, redecorating
it at the same time). Nan will fill you up with what we talked about, and hopefully the next time we meet, more people
will turn up.
It was good fun for me, both the basketball, and the "jamming" session, if we can call it that. Thanks
Pol. Let me know when you need someone to hit the crap out of your drum set again. And you might want to consider sound
proofing your office too while you're at it.
